Illofa Camp Sites

These camp sites, just North of Henties Bay, in the mouth of the Omaruru river, are a very popular destination for the owners of Awesome Chapters.

The sites themselves are quite spacious, and have an ablution block with flush toilets and hot showers within walking distance. As the camp sites are situated on a clay bank, getting the tent pegs in and out can be a little bit of a chore, but at least they won’t blow away.

Out favorite part is that it is so close to the ocean, and one can hear the ocean roar while sleeping. It is an ideal base for the avid fisherman, the town is close by with all sorts of supplies, and the beach is even closer. Security is pretty good, so one can leave the camp unattended while on an excursion.

Here at Awesome Chapters we have a Conqueror Commander caravan. It’s one of the earlier models, but very well looked after. It helps to have a heavy lump of metal on windy days, and things like the gas stove and geyser helps with the basic creature comforts. When camping at Illofa for a few days, we usually pitch the whole thing, fully utilizing it’s two extra rooms, and we put down an 4.5m x 4.5m Event Shelter for good measure.

The last Christmas (2018) we spent the festive season at Illofa, and it was wonderful. Being the festive season, the town of Henties Bay was fully booked, and we were insightful enough to have booked a site at Illofa a couple of months in advance. With everything fully booked, there were crowds everywhere, and the atmosphere was electric in stark contrast with the usual deserted atmosphere that we enjoy for most of the year.
