Week 28 of 2020 – “The end”, or an awesome beginning?

When will the end of COVID-19 be?

It’s safe to say that the epidemic has kicked off in earnest in Namibia, with the end not even in sight. Walvis Bay, our hometown seems to be the focal point of the outbreak. Also, by this time everyone is sick of it, if not literally, then figuratively. The end of this thing seems to be pulling further away from us every day.

The endless horizons of Namibia is a great magnet for tourists.

Daily new cases keep on rising, and Walvis Bay has had 72 new cases just today. (One day after I was supposed to post this blog)

Of course, when the number of cases started rising in Walvis Bay, the government started locking down our little embattled town even further. This had the effect that a lot of people sneaked out of town, to non-locked down places. Unfortunately, some of these people were carrying the pathogen, and now it’s in the rest of the country.

Dassie (Hyrax) urine stains these rocks this bright white.

There are reports from both the South and North of the country, and people are starting to be tested positive.

South Africa has gone up a level again with it’s lock-down, we are sure to follow them again. Tricky, tricky, tricky… The end of this thing might still be some time away, but there seems to be ways and means to rise above the bedlam.

All this stay at home stuff is seriously affecting the average will to work. I mean, everyone is telling you it’s OK just to chill, right?

Birthday

Yup, my birthday was in the week. Isolde bought me a bottle of Vodka, and we had a lovely day. Really lovely!

Yeah, I know it’s not tourism, but that’s on ice at the moment. At the very least I am exercising my brain, and making something better. Finding and fixing bugs in the code has been immensely satisfying to me, and the game benefits from it too, I hope.

So, everybody wins! The other thing that I have slowly been working on is the Walvis Bay page on Wikipedia.

I have been submitting fixes for the code all week long, and learning the code base as I go along. High resolution backgrounds were last week, Load errors were sorted this week, with small amounts of other fixes all over the place.

For my next trick I am thinking of updating the loading screen into something that we can control. The text on the one that is there now is running over itself, and no one knows how to fix it. I have dived deep down into the code, and … nothing. Luckily, with code there are many ways to skin a cat. 🙂

As this blog was already supposed to be published yesterday, I’ll finish it up, and start work on the next one. In the meantime, here is some eye candy
