Scouting for a tour

Scouting for a tour

Putting together something special requires a bit of footwork. As locals, we know some places that very few people have seen, and a bit more about the history.

This last weekend we did a bit of scouting along an abandoned road that is mostly reclaimed by the dunes. This specific road used to lead from Walvis Bay to Rooibank. Unfortunately it is situated where the Kuiseb river used to flow before the flow was altered by a project to supply more water to the town.

The vehicle used for this type of scouting is very light weight, very powerful and highly modified. It was originally built to compete in the Vasbyt, a local offroad competition in Namibia. The video below was produced by Evert Vorster, and serves as an example of what these vehicles are capable of.

We did take a small bit of footage of the “road” that is followed for our last little scout. The location is very close to town, which makes the intended tour quick and cheap, with enough to see and do for tourists in a time constraint.

The camera used is the Samsung Gear 360, which produces video that you can look around in. If you have VR headset, you can immerse yourself in the action! Unfortunately the sound is not so good, as the external microphones pick up wind noise.

It’s not all work work work, though. We had a brunch with friends that we took along. Nothing fancy, just BBQ sausage on Brotchen. It is the location that makes it special. The desert is absolutely quiet, and this time there was no wind.

The kids & dog also enjoyed playing on the soft sand, and waling around on the clay plains, as there are relics from a few decades ago, when people used to live here.
