Prior to getting to Goanikontes, one has to stop and wonder at the beauty of the Swakop river canyon, better known as the moon landscape. For this tour, we see it in daylight, but walking through the riverbed at night makes one feel like you are on another planet.
Goanikontes is a Nama word meaning “The place where you can take your coat off.” We will have a relaxed lunch at this historic oasis in the desert. There are an eclectic mix of farm animals roaming free and in pens, and quite interesting to see up close. There is a play park for smaller kids, and is quite a popular place.
Goanikontes offers other activities including hiking biking and stargazing.
There is accommodation available which includes nice camping areas as well as bungalows. This makes it an ideal venue for functions and weddings for up to 120 people.
After the lunch we will visit the Ruins of the Weitzenberg farm, as well as a relaxed cruise in the Swakop riverbed itself, which has great rock formations.
The Witzenberg ruins are so close to Goanikontes that it would be a shame to miss out on them.
